Finding the color of a diamond
The Hope diamond is the most beautiful blue diamond in the world and is valued at approximately three million dollars. Did you know that diamond comes in various colors? While most range from colorless to light yellow, some diamonds have a natural, deep, distinct color. These can be blue, purple, pink, green, orange, yellow or brown.
The color and clearness are of great importance in determining the value of a diamond. The best way to find the true color of a diamond is to look at it against a white surface. Interestingly, the true color is not judged by comparing one diamond with another.
How often we try to determine our spirituality by comparing our selves one with another. It is easy for us to forget that our white surface is Jesus Christ and not the life of another believer. Jesus said, "I have given you an example, and you should do as I have done." -John 13:15
We don't just compare ourselves to others, we get distracted by them. It seems we often spend more time thinking about what others are doing or not doing instead of on our own obedience. A well-known Olympic coach said, "If you worry about what your rival is doing you take your mind off what you are doing and so fail to concentrate on you own performance." It reminds me of when Peter asked Jesus, "What about John?" He meant, so what is John suppose to do? Jesus basically told Peter it was none of his business and his responsibility was to do what Jesus had told him to do. Read the account for yourself in John 21:20-22.
When we become distracted we are no longer alert to danger and we lose sight of our goal. Satan often appeals to our old nature to catch us in this trap. When we yield to this temptation, we give our enemy a tremendous advantage and will have difficulty reaching our own goal.
It is time for us to lay our spiritual life next to our white surface, Jesus Christ. How do we measure up? Have we become distracted by those around us? Remember: "So then each of us shall give account of himself to God." -Romans 14:12
THOUGHT TO PONDER:What do you spend most of your time thinking about?
What is the goal for your life?
